Hi Everybody,

Sorry I did not blog yesterday.  I did not have internet access at home for some reason...seems to be up and running this morning.

Fraction exams were handed back & reviewed yesterday in class.  I did recollect the exams as there is a handful of students that have been absent and missed the test on Monday.

We are starting our Rates, Ratios, & Percent Unit in Math.  Please bring in a new journal for this unit...thanks.

We did some station work yesterday looking at:
-Pressure scenarios in Science
-multiples/factors/equivalent fractions
-converting between fractions/percents/decimals

I'm so looking forward to reading through your Diet Coke/Coke buoyancy performance based assessments!

Dividing fractions mini-assignment was handed back & reviewed today...I am available in Study Stop every Wednesday.

Your fractions exam has been moved to Monday...

Math & Science

Great work on your density/buoyancy responses to our floating/sinking egg scenario.  You will have a performance based assessment tomorrow on buoyancy...remember there will be 3 density calculation questions on the front page (show all your work/units etc).

Math dividing fractions mini-assignment today was handed in at the end of the day.  Please be working towards ramping up for your unit exam on Thursday.  There are practice tests/chapter reviews in our textbook for you to work through.

Here is a copy of the 4 level response that we discussed today:

Egg sink or float.

4 level response for floating or sinking egg

solution 1 - - tap water - - Density aprox - 1g/ml

solution 2 - - high concentration sugar solution - - density aprox - 1.12g/ml

The first egg sinks to the bottom of the solution. This is because a raw egg has a greater density than regular tap water. Essentially, the egg has more matter stuffed into a specific area (volume) than the same amount of water.  Gravity pulls the egg down; the buoyant force of the solution is not large enough to float the egg.  When the egg is placed in the second solution, the egg floats. The density of the second solution is greater than the egg, allowing the egg to float.  The second solution creates a larger buoyant force than gravity is pulling down, so there is greater force pushing the egg up.  Based upon my observations I estimate the density of the egg to be 1.09g/ml.

Checking In

Hi Everybody,

Sorry for the late post...

I was very impressed by your contributions in class today around our intro to density!!!  Fantastic work!  We will jump into labs/activities tomorrow.

You were all so engaged in researching stocks today it was wonderful.  We will start trading in the morning.  Hopefully you will start to listen to the business reports on the news or pick up the newspaper and flip to the business section.  Ask your adults for guidance/thoughts/hints/tips etc and continue to research your stocks to ensure that you are making the best decisions for your trades & portfolio!

I'm not sure we will have much time together on Friday as the Remembrance Day assembly will fall during our block rotation.  We will need to be flexible around this and perhaps pick up a bit of extra homework load this weekend.

Math HW p. 202-203 #4-9, 12, 16, 17

Please work through your Science in your journals...due Thursday please...be ready for a quiz on viscosity on Thursday.

Science 8:  Viscosity
Please complete the following tasks in your Science journal.  You will have a quiz on Thursday on viscosity.  Please ensure that your work is neat, complete, organized, supported with detail, and in order.
1.       Watch the Pitch Test video…take a few jot notes.

2.       Create a visual journal page for the words viscosity, viscous, flow rate.  Include definitions, diagrams, examples.  Use each word in a sentence.

3.       Complete Determining Flow Rate Demo…we will do this as a class on Tuesday.  Calculate flow rate for each liquid.

4.       Take some notes from your textbook from p. 45-49.  Pay close attention to:

Product performance                                    viscosity of liquids & temperature
Viscosity of gases & temperature             superfluids

5.       How does temperature affect the flow rate of liquids?  Explain using particles.

6.       How does temperature affect the viscosity of gasses?  Try your best to explain using particles.

7.       Read Investigation 1-G Flowing Fluid Floods City.  Answer questions #1-4.

8.       How are viscosity, the size and shape of particles, and internal friction related?

9.       Asphalt is the black, sticky material that binds gravel in the pavement that covers streets and highways.  Explain why paving is almost always done during the summer months.

10.   The lower the SAE (10,20,30,40,50) grade of oil, the faster the flow rate of the oil.  Explain which type of oil you should use in a car engine in the summer.  Explain why you chose this grade of oil.  Explain which type of oil you should use in a car engine in the winter.  Explain why you chose this grade of oil.  Remember to connect your responses to particles!!

Visual Journal Solubility Page

Hi Everybody,

Great class today.

I hope you are feeling more comfortable with the Science rubric and that you received some valuable feedback on your 4 solubility responses.

Check out the clip we watched today:
go to youtube type in solutions and dissolving and scroll down to the clip that says lesson 6.3

For Thursday:

You will have the double period tomorrow to work on your interactive visual journal page on solubility...be sure to include the following terms:

soluble                solution                agitation
solvent                supersaturated      solution
particle attraction
solute                   saturated solution
particle collisions
solubility             unsaturated solution
solution                dissolving
insoluble              factors that affect dissolving

Your double page journal spread needs to include colour, text (definitions/examples), and pictures.

Journal Response:

How did the Tide to Go get out the lipstick stain?

What do you suppose raincoats are coated with? Where did scientists get this idea? Explain in detail what happens when raindrops fall on to a raincoat (refer to particles).

I am away tomorrow so please use your class time effectively.

Thursday, 25 September 2014

Happy Almost Friday

Hi Everybody,

Great work reviewing your labs today and class and taking the time to rework through your conclusions.  Please be ready to hand in your journals on Tues...I will take about 5-8 at a time so they are manageable.  This way they can be fully assessed using our new rubric.

I thought you did a wonderful job on going through your multiplying integer quizzes question by question and providing feedback.

For Tuesday...
-please look through Mix & Flow of MatterTopic 2 in your Sci textbook and answer the following questions in your journals

1.  What makes materials dissolve?
2.  What is a solvent?
3.  What is a solute?
4.  Why is water considered the universal solvent?  Positive and negative implications must be stated in your argument.

-perhaps a little bit of review on adding/subtracting integers, and your multiplication tables might be a good idea as we dig deeper into division

Have lots of fun at Fall Field Day tomorrow.

Enjoy your weekend and the extra day off on Monday.

Take care,
Ms. Krushel
